When a report of abuse and/or neglect; non-abuse or neglect (without proper parental care and control, truancy, and runaways); or pregnant woman using substances is made to DCF, an Initial Assessment is made to determine if DCF should become involved.
Reports of abuse and/or neglect which met criteria for DCF involvement are assigned to a PPS social worker or special investigator for investigation. The safety of the child(ren) is assessed by completing a risk and safety assessment. Upon completion of the investigation of abuse and/or neglect, a case finding decision is made of either unsubstantiated or substantiated. All family cases meeting criteria for assignment are assessed to determine whether services are needed. This assessment may result in families being provided or referred to services such as family preservation, foster care, or other services available in the community.
